You will be required to be adequately hydrated for the test. Drinking 1-2 litres of water before your procedure. A full bladder is not required for this examination, so please empty as frequently as you need.
A cannula is inserted into a vein, usually in your arm, in preparation for an injection. The injection contains a slightly radioactive tracer that travels to the kidneys via the blood stream. There are no side effects from this tracer, and it contains only a small amount of radiation.
Imaging of the kidneys will commence immediately and continue for 40 minutes. Depending on your clinical indications, a second injection of Lasix may be administered half way through imaging to help kidney drainage.
Our Nuclear Medicine Physician will review the images and issue a report. Once completed, the report will be sent electronically to your referring health professional.
A MAG-3 Renal Scan is an examination that shows renal function and assesses drainage of the urinary system.

This examination is not suitable for pregnant women. Breastfeeding mothers may undergo the procedure, but will need to cease breastfeeding for 12 hours after the scan. Breast milk should be expressed & discarded during this period. Breastfeeding may resume after the 12 hours.
